Aggies Lead League with Seven All-Big 12 Awards

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The No. 13 Texas A&M softball team led the league with seven All-Big 12 selections, the conference office announced today.

Junior Mel Dumezich and sophomores Nicole Morgan and Cassie Tysarczyk were named the All-Big 12 first team, while sophomore Emily Albus, juniors Meagan May and Brittany Walker, and senior Natalie Villarreal took second-team honors.

Dumezich (Whiting, Ind.) earns her third all-conference honor and her second selection to the All-Big 12 first team after leading the Aggies from the circle. The right-hander (28-11) records a 2.03 ERA on the season with 294 strikeouts, eight solo shutouts and two saves. She leads the Big 12 in overall stats in innings pitched (259.0), wins (28), appearances (47) and games started (37), and ranks second in strikeouts (294). Dumezich is also crucial from the plate this season, leading the team with 44 RBI and 17 home runs. Her 294 strikeouts rank 10th in the nation, and she ranks 12th in victories, 22nd in home runs and 25th in home runs per game (0.31).

Morgan (The Woodlands, Texas) is receiving All-Big 12 honors for the first time in her career. The sophomore is hitting .280 on the season with seven home runs, four doubles, 21 RBI and 27 walks. Morgan ranks second in the league in conference stats with a .561 on base percentage, and sits at third with a .383 batting average and a .746 slugging percentage.

Tysarczyk (San Antonio, Texas) has been a mainstay for the Aggies this season, leading the Big 12 in conference stats with 26 RBI. In overall stats, the right fielder ranks second on the team with a .322 batting average on six doubles, a team-best two triples and 33 runs, and eight home runs. Her 40 RBI are second-highest among the Aggies and she is perfect on the base paths, stealing six bags this season. This is the first All-Big 12 honor of Tysarczyk's career.

Albus (Brenham, Texas) leads A&M from the plate with a .399 average on the season. The speedy left fielder owns an impressive 32 bunt singles and 11 sacrifice bunts this season. She ranks second in overall stats in sacrifice bunts, third in batting average and second with 65 hits. Albus has scored 28 times this season and leads the team with 14 stolen bases. In conference-only stats, Albus ranks fourth in total plate appearances (90) and ties for first in at bats (83). This is the first All-Big 12 award for Albus.

May (Spring, Texas) makes her second appearance on the All-Big 12 team after being selected as a freshman in 2010. The junior catcher leads the team and the conference with 53 walks this season, while ranking fourth in the nation. She also contributes a team-second 11 home runs and 31 RBI from the plate for a .291 average on the season. May's .483 on base percentage in conference play ranks fourth in the league.

Walker (Tomball, Texas) is hitting .317 on the season with a team-best eight doubles and the first two home runs of her career. The junior owns 20 RBI and 20 runs on 45 hits. Walker's nine sacrifice bunts this season tie for third in the conference in overall statistics. The shortstop is taking all-conference honors for the first time in her career.

Villarreal (Frisco, Texas) leads the league in overall games in total plate appearances (209) and at bats (183), while ranking second in conference only stats in total plate appearances (91) and tying for first in at bats (83). The senior ties for a team-best eight doubles this season leads the Aggies with 35 runs scored. She is perfect in stolen base attempts with 10 steals and has a team second-best 53 hits for 25 RBI this season. Villarreal takes All-Big 12 honors for the third time in her career.

The No. 8 seed Aggies will host LSU, Bethune-Cookman and Texas State in the NCAA Softball College Station Regional this weekend at the Aggie Softball Complex. A&M takes on Bethune-Cookman Friday at 7 p.m., while LSU and Texas State will face off at 4 p.m. All games will be broadcast on ESPN3.
