COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Texas A&M softball junior Mel Dumezich has been named the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season, the conference office announced today.
Dumezich (Whiting, Ind.) led the Aggies to their second conference series sweep this weekend against Kansas in A&M's final three games in the Big 12. This is the second Big 12 weekly honor for Dumezich this season and the fourth of her career. The Aggies have claimed four consecutive weekly honors this season.
The right-handed ace was almost perfect from the circle all weekend, owning a 2-0 record in two starts while throwing 11 shutout innings and giving up just four hits by the Jayhawks. In Sunday's 9-0 run-rule, Dumezich combined with senior Lindsey Sisk for a no-hitter, starting the game and throwing three perfect innings with five strikeouts. The junior never walked a batter and fanned 16 in the effort. Dumezich was also crucial from the plate, hitting .500 on the weekend as she scored on a solo home run each day. She was a weekend-best 2-for-3 on Sunday with a bomb and a base hit. In the Aggies' Saturday comeback win, Dumezich hit the game winner, a solo shot over left-center, before finishing the game in the circle with a pair of strikeouts in one inning of work.
This season Dumezich leads the conference in overall statistics in wins (26), innings pitched (243.0), appearances (44) and games started (35) and ranks second in strikeouts (277). She also graces the national leader boards in home runs per game (35th), strikeouts per seven innings (42nd), victories (12th), home runs (29th) and strikeouts (10th).
Dumezich and the Aggies travel to Boise, Idaho, this weekend for a three-game nonconference series vs. Boise State to close out the 2012 regular season. Each game will begin at 5 p.m. CST on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. To learn more about Texas A&M softball, log on to AggieAthletics.com or follow @AggieSoftball on Twitter.
