BIRMINGHAM – A pair of Texas A&M cross country athletes earned SEC Runner of the Week honors after the Aggies won the Houston Baptist Invitational this past weekend.

Jakes Roberts claimed the SEC men’s Runner of the Week after he ran the 5,000-meter course in 15 minutes, 29 seconds to place fifth overall and lead the A&M crew to a winning score of 20 points. Alex Riba earned SEC men’s Freshman Runner of the Week honors as he ran the course in 15:31 and was the second Aggie finisher and placed sixth overall.

Among team scoring athletes Roberts was the second finisher in adjusted scoring as the Aggies produced places 2-3-4-5-6 in totaling 20 points to finish ahead of the host Huskies, who produced a score of 45 points. The first five runners for A&M were separated by just an 11 second gap. The time by Roberts is seventh best among SEC runners over the 5k distance this season.

Riba, who led the Aggie group through various parts of the race, was just two seconds behind Roberts as he finished third in the adjusted scoring. Riba’s time is the eighth fastest mark recorded in the SEC this season over a 5k course.

Up next for Texas A&M is a trip to Madison, Wisconsin, this weekend for the fifth annual Wisconsin adidas Invitational that will feature 35 national caliber teams. SEC schools involved in the meet include Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Missouri, Tennessee and Vanderbilt.
