Aggie men repeat as top team in relay rankings

MOUNTAIN VIEW, California - Texas A&M repeated as the top men's relay team in the 56th annual rankings conducted by Track & Field News. The Aggies become the first team to defend their relay title in the magazine's rankings since Arkansas in 2004.

The Texas A&M women, also the top relay team in 2011, tied for No. 3 with Tennessee this season behind Oregon and LSU.

With points awarded based on rankings in seven different relay events, the Aggie men totaled 34 points to finish ahead of Baylor (27) as well as a three-way tie for third between Arkansas, LSU and Penn State at 23 points apiece. For the A&M women a point tally of 25 followed Oregon's 47 and LSU's 43.

In the men's relay rankings Texas A&M topped the 4 x 200 field while ranking third in the 4 x 800, fifth in the 4 x 100, sixth in the 4 x 400, eighth in the 4 x Mile, 10th in the sprint medley and 10th in the distance medley.

Track & Field News noted: "A&M scored a 4x2 win and did the rest of its damage on depth, scoring in every discipline except the shuttle hurdles."

Among the women's relay rankings the Aggies were second in the 4 x 100, along with third in the 4 x 200 and 4 x 400 relays.

Texas A&M vs. LSU football game note

Two members of the LSU Tiger football team are sons of former LSU All-Americans who were part of the Tiger track and field team while Texas A&M head coach Pat Henry was the head coach at LSU.

Odell Beckham, Jr. is a wide receiver with the Tigers and the son of Odell Beckham Sr., a running back for LSU from 1989-1992, and Heather Van Norman, who was part of five national championship teams with the Tigers from 1991-1993. Van Norman was a six-time All-American and ran on three NCAA championship relay teams as a senior in 1993.

Eric Reid, Jr. plays safety for LSU and is the son of Eric, Sr. and Sharon Reid. As a three-time All-American hurdler for the Tigers from 1984-87, Eric Reid, Sr. won a NCAA title in the 110 hurdles and is a member of the LSU Athletic Hall of Fame.

Former Bowerman winners return for 2012 ceremony

Texas A&M's Jessica Beard will be among five previous winners of The Bowerman award when it is presented at the 2012 ceremony during the USTFCCCA convention in Orlando this December.

ESPN's John Anderson will serve as master of ceremonies on the evening of Wednesday, December 19 as the 2012 Bowerman will be presented to one of three male finalists - Cam Levins (Southern Utah), Tony McQuay (Florida), and Andrew Riley (Illinois) - as well as one of three female finalists - Brigetta Barrett (Arizona), Kimberlyn Duncan (LSU), and Brianne Theisen (Oregon).
