Texas A&M athletic scholastic supervisor Chris Barttelbort has received the prestigious Ed Guthrie Advisor Award, the University Advisors and Counselors announced.
Barttelbort, in his fifth year with Texas A&M’s Center of Student-Athlete Services, works primarily with the Aggies’ men’s and women’s track and field programs and the women’s swimming and diving program.
Barttelbort was nominated for the honor by Texas A&M track and field coach Pat Henry, who wrote: “Chris Barttelbort exemplifies every asset of the Guthrie Award criteria.  It would seem that this Award was written for just such a person. He works from sun-up to sun-down and he is always accessible to the students.  All of our team members have his cell phone number and Chris has told them to contact him at any time if they have an issue.  This is not a job for Chris -- it is a passion.”
The track and field program has flourished academically under Barttelbort. Either the men’s or women’s cross country teams has earned All-Academic Team recognition every year since 2006, sometimes both teams in the same year, from the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Over 20 student-athletes received All-Academic honors from the USTFCCA during that same time span. Three Aggie track and field/cross country athletes have received the Big 12’s Prentice Gautt Post-Graduate Scholarship Award.
Under Barttelbort’s advisement, the Aggie women’s swimming and diving program has achieved the athletic department’s highest team GPA four times, have been named an Academic All-America Team by the College Swim Coaches Association (CSCAA) five times and produced six academic All-Americans. Aggie swimmers have received the prestigious Elite 88 Academic Award at the NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships the past two years.
Created in 1989 by Texas A&M Board of Regents member Royce Wisenbaker, the award recognizes the efforts of faculty and staff members who exemplify former advisor Dr. Ed Guthrie’s spirit and concern for students’ welfare combined with skillful and insightful advisement.
