COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas A&M Aggies played a 60-minute intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday evening at Ellis Field with the White squad toppling the Maroon team 3-0.
The match started with the Maroon squad sporting 10 of the Aggies’ starters from 2013 along with Grace Wright in the first of three 20-minute periods. The White squad featured newcomers Stephanie Malherbe and Haley Pounds along with four available reserves from last year’s unit with the rest of the formation filled out with male practice players. The rosters were shuffled for the next two 20-minute periods with the male practice players staying with the white squad.
The teams played to a 0-0 draw through the first 20 minutes with the squads combining for 10 shots.
The White broke the scoring seal seven minutes into the second period on a goal from a male practice player. Despite yielding the goal, Renee McDermott put forth a heroic effort in the stanza making three spectacular saves on shots by Annie Kunz.
Two minutes into the third period, Malherbe worked her way down the left flank and sent a ball into the six-yard box where Bianca Brinson sent it to the back of the net.
The scoring was capped by Shea Groom who launched a shot from 20 yards out that went inches below the cross bar for the 3-0 lead with 15 minutes remaining in the match.
Texas A&M continues the spring schedule on Sunday, March 2 when the Aggies host Houston South Select of the Women’s Premier Soccer League in a 4 pm match at Ellis Field.

Overall thoughts on the match: Considering we’ve only had three practices this semester, I thought there was some really good play out there. Renee (McDermott) made some great saves to really get things going for her side. It was good to see Stephanie Malherbe get an assist on the goal that BB (Bianca Brinson) scored. Shea (Groom) also had a heck of a goal on hers. All in all, we’re happy. Everyone stayed healthy tonight. We can definitely build off this.
On newcomers Haley Pounds and Stephanie Malherbe’s first performance: This was their first experience so we wanted it to be as positive as possible. Stephanie had a nice assist and Haley got more and more comfortable as the match went on.
