COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Texas A&M former soccer forward Merritt Mathias has signed with the New York Fury of the Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL) Elite League, the organization announced today.
Mathias will report immediately to play for the Fury and Head Coach Paul Riley.
"[Merritt is] a young super-speedy forward with a rifle of a right foot and a very good understanding of the final third of the field," Riley said. "She has a great temperament, fantastic training habits and has the potential to play at the highest level. She will be a crowd favorite for sure."
After transferring from North Carolina, Mathias spent her final two seasons with the Aggies, helping them to a pair of Big 12 Championships and back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Second Round. She garnered numerous awards including two All-Big 12 first team selections and spots on the 2010 Big 12 All-Newcomer Team and the 2011 All-Big 12 Tournament Team. Mathias was also placed on the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List as a senior at A&M and earned several weekly awards.
The Birmingham, Ala., native was a mainstay for the Aggies in the past two seasons and started in 24 games in 2011, netting eight goals, three of them game winners. Mathias also assisted a team second-best 11 assists. In her junior season the forward started in 20 matches and scored nine goals, including four game-winning goals, and assisted five.
The New York Fury begin WPSL Elite League play on May 12 with a game at New England against the Mutiny.
