COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M sophomore defender Karlie Mueller earned a spot on the United States U-20 Women’s National Team squad headed to Gavle, Sweden from May 24 to June 3 U.S. Soccer recently announced.

United States U-20 WNT head coach Michelle French tabbed 20 players to make the Scandinavian trip in preparation for 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’ s World Cup qualifying. The team will play against the Sweden U-20 Women’s National Team on Friday, May 31 and Sweden’s U-23 Women’s National Team on Sunday, June 2. The June 2 contest will be on a day that both the U.S. Men’s National Team and U.S. Women’s National team will be playing matches as part of U.S. Soccer’s 100th Anniversary Centennial celebrations.

The Sioux Falls, South Dakota native appeared in 18 games with seven starts as a freshman in 2012. She helped anchor a defense that registered a school record 15 shutouts and registered a 0.49 goals-against average.

Mueller is believed to be the first native of South Dakota to play for the United States U-20 WNT.

"It is a great honor to be called on to play for your National Team,” Texas A&M head coach G Guerrieri said. “I know Karlie is very excited about the opportunity. More than 40 Texas A&M soccer players have received a National Team call-up over the years, and our coaching staff (Phil Stephenson, Lori Stephenson, and I) is honored anytime one of our players receives a call-up.”

Both games will be played in Gavle, which is situated on the east coast of Sweden about 125 miles north of Stockholm. Gavle was the site of four of the USA’s six matches in the 1995 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The roster consists of eight collegiate players and one professional in 18-year-old Lindsey Horan, who is finishing up her first season with Paris Saint-Germain in the French First Division.
