CLE ELUM, Washington – The Texas A&M women’s golf team prevailed through difficult weather conditions to advance to the NCAA Women’s Golf Championships as they finished in a tie for sixth at the NCAA West Regional at the Tumble Creek Golf Course at Suncadia Resort. The University of Washington hosted the regional on the par 72, 6,252 yard course about 90 miles west of Seattle.

“The conditions were incredibly tough out there today as we teed off in the snow,” Texas A&M women’s golf head coach Trelle McCombs said. “The winds were higher than they called for. We battled literally from the first shot to the last.”

Texas A&M freshman Marijosse Navarro led the charge for the Aggies finishing fourth individually at even-par. The All-SEC Freshman team member registered nine birdies and an eagle over 36-holes of action. The Mexico City native has taken little time to adjust to college golf and has finished in the top-20 in all five tournaments since joining the maroon and white in January.

“I was really impressed by Chelsea and MJ today,” McCombs said. “Those two kept scrambling all day. There was not a ton of pars on the course today so that was a great score. Those two found a way to get it done today.”

No. 1 Southern Cal captured the West Regional title at 12-over par, the Ladies of Troy held or shared the lead after each round. Joining the Trojans in qualifying for the NCAA Championship were Washington, Arizona State, Oklahoma, Michigan State, Iowa State, Texas A&M and Northwestern. Wake Forest and Wisconsin tied for ninth, missing the cut by just seven strokes. Completing the leaderboard were GRU-Augusta, UC Davis, Clemson, Oregon, New Mexico, Tennessee, Chattanooga, Notre Dame, Denver, Gonzaga, San Diego State, Portland State, New Mexico State and Detroit.

Navarro’s fellow freshman Andrea Jonama finished nine-over par in a tie for 17th. The Spaniard registered her fourth top-20 finish in her first season of collegiate golf. Completing the A&M contingent were senior Katerina Ruzickova at 16-over in a tie for 49th, senior Chelsea Mocio at 20-over in a tie for 68th and freshman Bianca Fabrizio at 36-over in a tie for 118th.

The top eight teams and two individuals advanced from each regional to the NCAA Championship held May 20-23 at the Tulsa Country Club in Tulsa, Okla., hosted by the University of Tulsa. The two individuals qualifying from the West Regional were Clariss Guce of CSU-Northridge and Tonje Daffinrud of Denver. The 2014 championship will be the second for Tulsa Country Club, Duke claimed the 1999 National Championship in Tulsa.

“Tulsa Country Club is a great venue for a national championship,” McCombs added. “We are so excited about making it back to nationals. The stress of making it is so difficult; especially when the conditions were as tough as they have been the last two days. I am familiar with the course somewhat after coaching at Tulsa for a year. I believe they have made a few changes since I was there. It will be fun taking the team there.”

The NCAA trip will be the fifth in the last seven seasons for Texas A&M. Stay tuned to AggieAthletics.com and follow @AggieWomensGolf on Twitter for coverage of Texas A&M women’s golf.
