CLE ELUM, Washington - The 32nd ranked and 12th-seeded Texas A&M women’s golf team looks for its fifth NCAA Championship berth in the last seven years when the Aggies begin play at the NCAA West Regional on Thursday at the Tumble Creek Golf Course at Suncadia Resort.
The top eight teams and two individuals will advance from each regional to the NCAA Championship held May 20-23 at the Tulsa Country Club in Tulsa, Okla., hosted by the University of Tulsa. The 2014 championship will be the second for Tulsa Country Club, Duke claimed the 1999 National Championship in Tulsa.
The NCAA West Regional 54-hole event at the par-72, 6,252 yard Tumble Creek Golf Course continues through Saturday. The field includes 24 of the top teams in the country and six additional individuals not on those teams.
“After seeing this course for the first time yesterday, all I can say is that it is a beautiful course,” head coach Trelle McCombs said. “The set up so far is very fair and if the weather holds up there should be some great scores this week.”
Texas A&M is making its 14th straight regional appearance and its 19th in the last 20 seasons. The Aggies finished in a tie for 12th at last year’s West Regional in Stanford, Ca. as then-junior Katerina Ruzickova led the maroon and white in a tie for 26th at seven-over par.
The Aggies were one of 24 teams selected for the West Regional and were seeded 12th behind Southern Cal, Arizona State, Oklahoma, Washington, Clemson, Wake Forest, Northwestern, Michigan State, Iowa State, GRU Augusta and Oregon. The field also includes UC Davis, Denver, San Diego State, Wisconsin, Gonzaga, Notre Dame, Tennessee, Chattanooga, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Portland State and Detroit.
Additionally, the six individuals sent to Washington are Alison Knowles of Univ. of Louisiana – Monroe, Regan De Guzman of San Jose State, Clariss Guce of Cal. State Northridge, Fabiola Arriaga of UTSA, Madchen Ly of Fresno State and Alexandra White of BYU.
“I really like our approach of deciding a postseason team early this season and it has helped the team gel,” McCombs added. “I think the team is responding well to knowing who would be competing this weekend after playing together at the SEC Championship a couple weeks ago.”
The Aggies tee off at 9:30 a.m. (CT) from hole 10 and are paired with golfers from GRU-Augusta and Oregon for the first round. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
