COLLEGE STATION – Texas A&M freshman Marijosse Navarro was named Southeastern Conference Golfer of the Week earlier Wednesday afternoon, announced by the league office. The recognition was Navarro’s second in three weeks from the SEC after being named Freshman of the Week two weeks ago.
“What a great honor for such a young player,” head coach Trelle McCombs said. “I am so excited for MJ, she deserves the recognition as she has worked hard on her game the last couple years. I feel like this will not be the last time she will be honored if she continues to play like this and improve.”
The Mexico City native has taken little time to adjust to college golf having finished in the top-15 in all three tournaments in the maroon and white. The freshman arrived in College Station this spring and immediately made an impact in the lineup helping the Aggies finish in the top-5 in each of the tournaments she has competed in.
Last weekend Navarro claimed runner-up honors at the loaded SunTrust Gator Invitational in Gainesville. The rookie finished ahead of eight players currently ranked in the top-50 in the country at five-over par through 54 holes. Navarro tallied 40 pars over the three days in the Sunshine State.
Navarro and the Aggies returns to action April 4 for the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic in Athens. Stay tuned to AggieAthletics.com and follow @AggieWomensGolf on Twitter for coverage of Texas A&M women’s golf.
