GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Reigning SEC Freshman of the Week Marijosse Navarro finished day one in a tie for 5th place, just one shot off the individual lead. The Aggies sit just nine strokes behind first-round co-leaders Ohio State and Florida State in a tie for 10th place.

Trailing the Buckeyes and Seminoles on the leaderboard were Penn State, Arizona, Virginia, Oklahoma, Miami, Kent State, Old Dominion and A&M. Host-Florida, Furman, South Florida and UTSA rounded out the leaderboard.

“We just did not take care of business today and let some opportunities get away from us,” head coach Trelle McCombs said. “We are just a couple strokes away from the top of the leaderboard, so we have a chance the next two days to play our way back into contention.”

Navarro carded two birdies against three bogeys to turn in a first round 71 on the par 70, 6,002 yard Mark Bostick Golf Course. The Mexico City native has made a habit of finding herself near or at the top of the leaderboard after winning last week at the Battle at the Valley and placing 11th in her A&M debut at the UC Irvine Invitational.

“MJ is such a steady player and nothing really rattles her,” McCombs said. “She was tidy on the course and that is what separated her from the rest of the team today and allowed her to finish day one near the top.”

Fellow freshman Bianca Fabrizio finished at five-over in a tie for 38th through 18 holes. Seniors Katerina Ruzickova (76, t47th) and Chelsea Mocio (79, t60th) and freshman Andrea Jonama (81, t67th) rounded out the maroon and white lineup.

The tournament resumes Saturday morning at 8 a.m. with the Aggies teeing off alongside golfers from Florida and Furman at 8 a.m. from hole 10. Live scoring for the event is available at golfstat.com.
