CHARLESTON, S.C. –Texas A&M women’s golf incoming freshman Bianca Fabrizio and senior Chelsea Mocio completed in the first round of the US Women’s Amateur Championship on Monday, finishing at nine-over and eleven-over, respectively.
“The greens were firm and fast today as the golf course really won the day,” Texas A&M head coach Trelle McCombs said. “The wind was the real factor in today’s round as the course played harder and harder as the day wore on.”
Fabrizio was a part of the day’s final group as she carded a nine-over (80) and is currently tied for 110th place. The native of Italy posted two birdies in the opening round, the first came on the par-3, 158-yard third hole and her second was at the par-4, 412-yard 16th hole. The freshman-to-be carded eight pars, five bogeys and three double-bogeys on the day.
Mocio, competing in her fourth consecutive US Women’s Amateur, finished the day tied for 137th at 11-over par. The Fort Worth native opened her round with five straight pars and added five additional pars over her final 13 holes. The senior, however, finished the day with six bogeys, one double bogey and one triple bogey in the round.
The field faced a very difficult course at the Country Club of Charleston Monday as only the first-day leader was able to shoot under par on the day, finishing the round at two-under. Seven golfers are tied for second-place at even par.
The field resumes play Tuesday morning at 6:30 a.m. (CT). Both Aggies will tee off at the 10th hole with Fabrizio beginning at 8:30 a.m. (CT) and Mocio slated to start at 11:40 a.m. (CT).
