LAWRENCE, Kan. - Texas A&M sophomore Katerina Ruzickova finished tied for fourth and the No. 11 Aggie women's golf team finished fifth in the opening round of the 2012 Big 12 Championship Friday at the Lawrence Country Club.
After a day of battling strong winds and a couple of lightning delays, Ruzickova closed her round just a stroke back of the three individual leaders with a 6-over 76. Junior Mary Michael Maggio was among a pair of players two shots back and tied for eighth with a 7-over 77.
"Kat and Trip played solid rounds for us today," A&M head coach Trelle McCombs said. "Both of them showed their maturity by staying patient all day. It's easy to get frustrated and impatient out here, but hats off to them for hanging in there."
As a team, the four-time Big 12 Champion Aggies carded a 38-over 318 and sit in fifth place.
Leading the 10-team Big 12 field is Iowa State with a 31-over 311. The Cyclones are followed by Baylor (+33, 313) in second, Oklahoma State (+35, 315) in third and Oklahoma (+36, 316) in fourth place. A&M is trailed by Missouri (322), Kansas State (323), Texas (325), Texas Tech (326) and Kansas (338).
"Conditions were very tough today," McCombs added. "It was tough for everyone though. We made some mental mistakes I haven't seen us make since the fall. We definitely have to be tougher mentally tomorrow."
All teams faced less-than-ideal conditions as wind speeds reached up to 30 mph throughout the day with frequent gusts to force an average individual score of 81.40.
The Aggies continue their pursuit of the Big 12 Championship at 9:20 a.m. Saturday. They tee off from the first hole and play alongside Missouri.
