Grunden tied for Third, Aggies in Seventh at PING/ASU Invitational

TEMPE, Arizona – Senior Susy Grunden leads the Aggie charge at four-under in a tie for third following the first round at the ASU Karsten Course, the Aggies settled into seventh just eight shots behind UCLA.

The Aggies finished the first 18-holes at one-under par in seventh place in the packed field. No. 11 UCLA leads the invitational at nine-under followed by Duke (-8), Southern Cal (-5), Alabama (-4) and Texas and UC Davis tied at fifth at two-under. Following A&M are Arizona (E), Stanford (+1), South Carolina (+3), Arizona State (+3), TCU, (+4), Washington (+4), Colorado (+10), UNLV (+17), Oregon (+23) and California (+25) rounding out the field.

“We are in a position to do something tomorrow,” Head Coach Trelle McCombs said after the round today. “The course is in great shape to go out and score well and the weather is better than we could have asked for. We are aiming to put ourselves in position after tomorrow’s round to make Sunday interesting.”

Grunden leads the Aggies in a tie for third at four-under, just one stroke behind the tournament leaders Laetitia Beck of Duke and Jennifer Yang of Washington sitting at five-under following the first 18-holes. Junior Chelsea Mocio sits in a tie for 11th place at two-under, with Senior Sarah Beth Davis sitting in a tie for 41st at two-over. Juniors Natalie Reeves (+3) and Katerina Ruzickova (+12) round out the A&M contingent in a tie for 48th and 87th respectively.

“Susy and Chelsea both played really steady today,” McCombs added about Grunden and Mocio’s strong opening rounds. “I am proud of how each of them handled themselves throughout the round and took care of business. Susy showed today that she can put together a great round and has a chance to put some pressure on the leaders over the weekend’s play.”

The Aggies will return to the course 10:00 a.m. (CT) with the lead group, joined with Arizona and Stanford to kick off the second day of play. Live scoring of the event can be found at
