CLE ELUM, Washington – Texas A&M freshman Marijosse Navarro fired a career-best five-under to finish day one in a tie for second individually and lead the Texas A&M women’s golf team to fourth place after the first day of action at the 2014 NCAA West Regional at the Tumble Creek Golf Club in the Suncadia Resort.

“MJ picked a great day to show the field what she is capable of,” Texas A&M head coach Trelle McCombs said. “She is just so solid and almost never makes a mistake that she carries with her for a couple holes.”

Navarro, a member of the 2014 SEC All-Freshman team, registered a team leading seven birdies against just a pair of bogeys on the par-72, 6,252 yard course. The Mexico City native closed her round with birdies on four of the last six holes to move the Aggies up the leaderboard.

The No. 1 Southern Cal Trojans claimed the first day lead at four-under par, followed by Washington, Arizona State, Texas A&M, Michigan State, Oklahoma, Iowa State, UC Davis, Wisconsin, Northwestern, Clemson and Denver in the top ten. Completing the field were Wake Forest, GRU Augusta, Tennessee, Oregon, Portland State, New Mexico, Chattanooga, Notre Dame, Gonzaga, San Diego State, New Mexico State and Detroit.

Navarro’s fellow freshman Andrea Jonama finished the round strong with two straight birdies to finish at one-over par in a tie for 19th. Senior Katerina Ruzickova trailed Jonama by just a stroke and is tied for 24th. Senior Chelsea Mocio finished round one at four-over in a tie for 45th place, while freshman Bianca Fabrizio was seven over in a tie for 80th place.

“I had no idea how we were playing as I walked with Chelsea for most of the day,” McCombs said. “She got started a little rough and we needed to right the ship. We are really proud of my team’s effort today. Andrea finishing with the birdies on the last two holes was just the icing on the cake.”

The Aggies will return to the course at 1:50 p.m. (CT) on hole one, joined with Oregon and GRU Augusta for the second day of play. Live scoring of the event can be found at GolfStat.com.
