COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Many of collegiate golf’s top teams and individuals are set to tee off at Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas, this weekend as Texas A&M hosts the Aggie Invitational.
Tee times and opening-day pairings have been set for the tournament with the first Aggies stepping to the tee box at 7:30 a.m. Saturday morning. Admission is free for all spectators, who are asked to turn cell phones off and remain on the cart paths or in the rough, while staying at least 15 yards away from the golfers.
The 2014 Aggie Invitational field consists of 12 teams, eight of which are ranked in the top 50 according to the most recent Golfweek/Sagarin rankings. Three of the teams (No. 2 Oklahoma State, No. 4 California and No. 10 Texas A&M) appear in the top 10 while two other squads (No. 25 Arkansas and No. 26 LSU) find themselves in the top 30.
In addition to the highly-ranked teams, the individual field includes nine players who are ranked among the top 50 golfers in the country (Golfweek/Sagarin).
“Every year we get some of the top golf teams and top golfers down for this tournament,” Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. “Cal and Oklahoma State are ranked in the top five and both Arkansas and LSU are also highly ranked. We’ve got some fantastic golf teams coming in as well as some great players. Jordan Niebrugge from Oklahoma State is going to leave our tournament to go play in the Masters next week, so hopefully Traditions gets him ready.”
Paired alongside golfers from Cal and Oklahoma State, Arnaus will be the first member of the A&M line-up to tee off on No. 1 at 7:50 a.m. followed by Lister at 8:00 a.m., Crancer at 8:10 a.m., Yates at 8:20 a.m. and Veerman at 8:30 a.m.
“We are dying to win a golf tournament,” Higgins added. “We seem to be the kings of the top-five finish this season. We usually find ourselves near the top of the leaderboard after competing really well but we want to bring home a victory heading into the postseason.”
Additionally, four more Aggie golfers will be competing in the field as individuals.
Sophomore Charlie Benell is slated to tee off from No. 1 at 7:30 a.m. with junior Ty Dunlap following at 7:40 a.m. Meanwhile, beginning their first round at No. 10 will be seniors Ryan Kelley (7:30 a.m.) and Jade Scott (7:40 a.m.).
The tournament’s second round will commence immediately after the conclusion of the opening round and is tentatively slated to begin with the first grouping returning to the course at 11:30 a.m.
