COLLEGE STATION – The Texas A&M women’s golf team returns to action at the 42nd Annual Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic hosted by the University of Georgia in Athens April 4-6.
The prestigious Liz Murphey Classic will take place at the par 72, 6,335 yard University of Georgia Golf Course. The 16-team field includes 12 teams currently ranked in the Golf Week top-50, including top-ranked Southern California. The tournament is set for an opening qualifying round on Friday, followed by match play on Saturday and Sunday.
“This tournament is unique in the fact that it is only one round of stroke play and then three rounds of match play on Saturday and Sunday,” head coach Trelle McCombs said. “It is a great way for us to practice what the NCAA Championship is going to be like in 2015.”
Texas A&M is no stranger to the Liz Murphey classic, then-senior Mary Michael Maggio won individual medalist honors at the 2013 tournament with a three-under par performance. The Aggies finished tied for eighth in last year’s 18-team field.
A&M returns to action after an impressive fourth place finish at the SunTrust Gator Invitational. Freshman Marijosse Navarro continued her impressive play since arriving in College Station in January with a runner-up finish in a field that included 14 top-100 players.
“The girls love match play and get pumped to play it,” McCombs said. “Our qualifying for this tournament was via match play. It was exciting and something different.”
“Chelsea made it to the finals against Katerina during qualifying so I look for her to play well in the matches,” McCombs added. “Our team is pretty solid top to bottom. You never know what could happen when it comes to match play.”
The tournament will tee off Friday morning at 7 a.m. (CT) with the Aggies stepping to the 10th tee box at 8:20 a.m. partnered with golfers from NC State and Troy. Live scoring for the event will be available at BirdieFire.com.
