Aggies Come Up Short, Fall to Auburn 10-8

Blythewood, S.C. – The No. 4-seeded Texas A&M equestrian team fell to No. 3 Auburn, 10-8 Saturday in the consolation round of the Southeastern Conference Championships at One Wood Farm.

Texas A&M falls to 2-10 on the season and finishes play in the SEC Championships in fourth place. Senior Laura Brainard took home Most Outstanding Player honors for her performance in horsemanship. Brainard was also named to the All-SEC Championship Team for horsemanship.

“I think the horsemanship team as a whole played to the ability that they’ve been capable of all year,” Horsemanship Coach Beth Bass said. “They got it done today. Laura Brainard was fantastic for us both days. She won both days and came out as MOP and earned All-Championship Team honors today. I’m so proud of her and what she’s been able to accomplish for us.”

Competition started with the Tigers taking a 4-1 edge over the Aggies in equitation on the flat. Texas A&M’s lone point came with sophomore Hannah Williams’ defeat of Auburn’s Ashley Foster by a score of 151-147. Williams took both of the two points that A&M scored in flat all weekend.

Texas A&M saw its deficit grow with a 2-1 loss in reining. Friday’s reining MOP, Hannah Jechow, scored the only Aggie point by defeating Auburn’s Hailey Munger 139-136.5. Sophomore Ashley Dotson and junior Ashley Skold tied their opponents, as neither team received the points. Junior Laura Sumrall fell to the event’s MOP, Katsy Leeman of Auburn, 136-140.5. Going into the final two events, the Tigers led 6-2.

Auburn took fences by a narrow margin of 3-2. A&M senior Shelby Lawson took the event’s first point by defeating Auburn’s Jennifer Waxman 157-109. Sophomore Hannah Williams saw her second victory of the day with a point-winning 157-137 effort. Junior Leah Chenelle received a whopping 163 points for her ride, but it would not be enough to defeat the event’s MOP, Auburn’s Quincy Hayes, who scored a 176. Hunter seat competition ended with the score in Auburn’s favor, 7-3.

The Aggies needed all five points in horsemanship if they wanted to tie the Tigers, who led the overall total 9-4. In dramatic fashion, the first three contests of the event were claimed by the Aggies. Caroline Ammons had the highest score of the event in a 150.5-148.5 victory and senior Laura Brainard had the second highest score of the event with a 150-145.5 effort. Junior Molli Jacobs also won a point in a 147-143 decision. Down 3-0, Auburn’s Hannah Loeske defeated freshman Rachel Lucht’s reviewed score of 126 by scoring a 135.5. The Auburn point put A&M just out of reach of tying the score. Logan Pluhar helped A&M ride out in style as the final rider of the day coasted to a 149.5-145 victory. A&M took horsemanship by a score of 4-1, giving A&M the overall victory in the western discipline, 5-3.

Up next, the Aggies will learn their postseason fate as the lineups for the National Collegiate Equestrian Association (NCEA) Championships are announced. To learn more about the team, log on to AggieAthletics.com and follow @AggieEquestrian on Twitter.
