COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M Soccer standout Shea Groom embarked on a trip to La Manga, Spain on Monday to participate in the Six Nations Tournament with the United States Under-23 Women’s National Team.
Groom is one of 20 players making the trek to Europe to play three international matches at the tournament. The United States has fixtures slated against Japan (March 1), Sweden (March 3) and Norway (March 5).
Groom was named to the NSCAA All-America Third Team following the 2013 campaign. She was also selected to the NSCAA All-South Region First Team as a midfielder one year after earning the honor as a forward in 2012. This season, the Liberty, Missouri product led the Aggies with 35 points on 14 goals and seven assists. She earned All-SEC First Team status and was named to the All-Tournament Team as A&M won its first-ever SEC Tournament title in November. In the Aggies’ 3-1 win over UMass in September, Groom logged A&M’s first hat trick since the 2011 season.
For her career, Groom has 68 points on 25 goals and 18 assists. Her freshman season was shortened by injury, limiting her to 10 games, but she posted 16 points on six goals and four assists in her abbreviated campaign. Last year she played in all 25 games, logging 17 points on five goals and seven assists.
A standout in the classroom, Groom was also tabbed to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Scholar All-America Team. Groom posted a 3.69 GPA in Recreation, Park and Tourism Sciences through the Summer 2014 sessions.
Groom was one of 24 players who attended a week-long U.S. Under-23 Women’s National Camp at the Olympic Training Center Chula Vista, California last May.
The squad, skippered by Steven Swanson, features nine NWSL players along with some of the top collegians in the nation.
