NORMAN, Okla. – The No. 8 Texas A&M men’s tennis team traveled to Norman for a noon match with No. 5 Oklahoma Sunday at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
Sunday’s match will be the third top-10 match for the Aggies (8-3) in as many weeks and seventh straight top-35 opponent. A&M is 3-3 in that stretch including wins over No. 14 Tennessee, No. 22 Illinois and No. 32 Tulsa.
“We are really looking forward to facing another top-10 opponent in Oklahoma,” head coach Steve Denton said. “We have been playing very well as of late and I like the way our whole line up is beginning to peak as we head into conference play.”
Friday night the Aggies dispatched the Golden Hurricane 6-1 indoors with current SEC player of the week Shane Vinsant and Harrison Adams logging wins over ranked opponents. Freshman Max Lunkin won for the sixth time this spring 6-4, 6-4 on court six over Daniel Santos. The No. 3 duo of Junior Ore and Jackson Withrow continued their stellar play this spring with a 8-5 win over No. 20 Clifford Marslan and Dylan McCloskey.
“Our doubles play this spring has really helped us get out to a good start in dual matches this season,” Denton said. “Friday night was a great example of seeing our depth with courts four, five and six all getting road wins. Oklahoma had a big win against Kentucky on Friday so we know they will be ready to play.”
The Sooners (9-1) topped No. 17 Kentucky Friday night behind wins from No. 4 Axel Alvarez, No. 28 Andrew Harris and No. 46 Dane Webb. Oklahoma also boasts the No. 2 player in the country in Guillermo Alcorta along with the 12th-ranked duo of Harris and Webb.
Following the trip to the Sooner state A&M will return home to open SEC play with matches against No. 13 Florida and No. 31 South Carolina next weekend. Stay tuned to AggieAthletics.com and follow @AggieMTEN on Twitter for coverage of Texas A&M men’s tennis.
