COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M Baseball head coach Rob Childress has been named to the staff of the 2014 Collegiate National Team, the USA Baseball office announced today.

Childress will serve as the pitching coach for the team, which will be led by Dave Van Horn (Arkansas) with Ray Birmingham (New Mexico) and Steve Rodriguez (Pepperdine) also serving as assistants.

Childress, who begins his ninth season at the helm of the Aggies this spring, has led A&M to a school-record seven consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament, which includes a trip to the College World Series in 2011. The Aggies skipper has compiled a 323-182-2 career record with the Maroon and White and also had three athletes compete on the Collegiate National Team over the past three seasons (Michael Wacha, Tyler Naquin and Daniel Mengden).

“It is an incredible honor to have the opportunity to coach for Team USA and be a part of such an incredible coaching staff with Dave, Ray and Steve,” Childress said. “They are not only incredible coaches but incredible men and great friends. The chance to coach some of the best collegiate talent in the country and to represent the United States together is going to be a humbling experience.”

Childress served as the pitching coach under Van Horn for five seasons at Nebraska where they amassed a 214-92 record, won three consecutive Big 12 Tournament titles and earned the Cornhuskers’ first regular-season conference title in 51 years. The pair posted back-to-back 50-win seasons in 2000 and 2001 and helped guide the club to its first NCAA Tournament berth in 18 years.
“I’m very excited to have Rob as an addition to this staff,” Van Horn said. “I think he’s one of the best coaches in the country. He’s definitely one of the best pitching coaches in the country. He always develops great pitching. I’m excited to spend 45 days with him this summer and get to know him and his family better. He brings a lot to the table from a leadership standpoint and he has a great ability to handle and manage a pitching staff. As I said before, I’m extremely excited to get to work together with Rob this summer.”

Team USA will play international friendship series with Chinese Taipei, Japan and Cuba, as well as compete in a domestic exhibition tournament and the Honkbal Baseball Week tournament in Haarlem, Netherlands, where Team USA is the defending bronze medalist.

Texas A&M opens the 2014 season on Feb. 14 against Northeastern at the friendly confines of Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park. Season tickets are currently on sale online at the 12thMan Foundation
