COLLEGE STATION—Texas A&M secondary coach Marcel Yates has decided to return to his alma mater to become the defensive coordinator for the Broncos, Boise State and Aggie head coach Kevin Sumlin announced today. Sumlin also announced that Jake Spavital will become offensive coordinator and will call plays offensively for the Aggies.

“We wish Marcel and his family all of the best as they return to Boise,” Sumlin said.

Yates graduated from Boise State in 2000 and after coaching the 2001 and 2002 seasons at Montana State, he returned to Boise State to serve as an assistant coach. He coached in the secondary from 2003-11 before accepting a position on Sumlin’s first Texas A&M staff in 2012.

Yates will coach the Aggie secondary through the Chick-fil-A Bowl (Dec. 31).

Spavital was the co-offensive coordinator and also coached quarterbacks in his first year on the Texas A&M staff. He has served with some of the top offensive coaches in the country including current head coaches Kevin Sumlin at Houston and Texas A&M, Kliff Kingsbury at Texas Tech, Dana Holgorsen at West Virginia as well as Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn. Some of the quarterbacks he has tutored include Johnny Manziel at Texas A&M, Case Keenum at Houston, Brandon Weedon at Oklahoma State and Geno Smith at West Virginia.

“Jake will call the offensive plays beginning immediately,” Sumlin explained.
