COLLEGE STATION, Texas – White clawed its way back to a 5-3 extra-inning win in the first game of the Texas A&M softball team’s Maroon & White Series, Monday at the Aggie Softball Complex.
The designated visitors led early-on, 3-1, but Maroon tied the game in the fifth and forced an extra inning. Senior Cassie Tysarczyk’s two-run, eighth-inning home run gave White a 1-0 series lead with the 5-3 win.
White put up three runs on four hits in the top of the third for a 3-0 jump on Maroon. Senior Taran Tyler led off with a base hit to right field and was followed onto the bags by freshman Abby Donnell, who drew a walk. Freshman April Ryan and sophomore Cali Lanphear hit back-to-back one-out singles, and Lanphear’s base hit to right-center gave Tyler and Donnell time to score for the 2-0 advantage. With Ryan on third, senior Cassie Tysarczyk sealed the deal with the third run of the inning on a double hit deep into center field.
Maroon answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning. Junior Brittany Clopton laced a two-out single through the left side to send senior Emily Albus home from second, unearned. Albus reached on a fielding error and stole second before using her speed to bring the score to 3-1 in White’s favor.
In the bottom of the fifth, Maroon tied the game at 3-3 with a two-RBI single through the left side by senior Jenna Stark. The base hit plated Albus and Clopton who reached on a bunt single and a walk, respectively. Freshman Suzanne White also had a hit in the fifth, and senior Nicole Morgan drew a walk as Maroon batted through the lineup.
The game remained tied through two more frames and entered extra innings. In the top of the eighth, Lanphear hit a two-out single and was replaced by Ryan on the base paths. Ryan stole second and took third on an error before Tysarczyk went yard for the 5-3 lead.
Freshman pitcher Abby Donnell threw a perfect frame in the bottom of the inning, and White took a series lead at 1-0. Donnell pitched two full innings for White, giving up two hits and striking out one. Sophomore transfer Katie Marks tossed the first six innings for the visitors, allowing two earned runs on six hits and two walks while striking out six.
Junior Sara Mireles started in the circle for Maroon, giving up three earned runs on five hits and two walks with one strikeout through four innings of work. Redshirt junior Rachel Fox finished the game for the designated home team, allowing two earned runs on two hits in four frames.
