WACO, Texas – The Texas A&M men’s tennis team had another successful day at the ITA/USTA Texas Regional Championships in Waco on Sunday. First serve on Monday is slated for 9 a.m.

“It’s been an awesome two days of tennis for our team,” Texas A&M head coach Steve Denton said. “This was just what the doctor ordered for this time of year. I’m very pleased that we have three players in the quarterfinals still battling and tomorrow is another great opportunity for improvement.”

The Maroon and White posted a 4-1 mark in the singles Round of 32 and a 3-1 mark in the Round of 16. The Aggies are tied with the Longhorns for most singles players remaining (3) while Baylor holds the two other slots.

Sophomore Shane Vinsant, the No. 3 seed in the tournament and 56th-ranked player in the ITA rankings, downed Austin Robles of UT-Arlington, 6-4, 6-2, in the Round of 32 before rallying to beat TCU’s Nick Chappell, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, in the Round of 16. Vinsant will face ninth-seeded Lloyd Glasspool of Texas in the quarterfinals on Monday.

The Aggies lone-senior, Junior Ore, bested Adrien Berkowics of Texas in the Round of 32 with a 6-3, 6-4 victory. Ore, the tournament’s No. 5 seed and nation’s 78th-ranked player, came from behind in the Round of 16 to beat ninth-seeded Arnau Dachs of TCU, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Ore will face Baylor’s Mate Zsiga, the No. 4 seed, in the quarterfinals tomorrow.

Junior Jackson Withrow upset two seeded players on the afternoon to advance to the quarterfinals. The Omaha native held on for a thrilling three-set victory over ninth-seeded Sudanwa Sitaram of Texas 6-3, 5-7, 6-3. After a narrow victory in the Round of 32, Withrow was unable to strike for the upset against Zsiga of Baylor, falling 6-0, 6-1.

The Aggies highest seeded singles player, junior Jeremy Efferding, rolled in both victories. The No. 2 seeded player drubbed Facundo Lugones of TCU, 6-3, 6-2, and then cruised against George Goldhoff of Texas, 6-1, 6-2.

Behzad Minavi was unable to complete his upset bid of Baylor’s ninth-seeded Diego Galeano, falling 6-4, 6-3.

In doubles, three pairs advanced to the quarterfinals with the duo of Ore and Withrow advancing to the semifinals.

The tournament’s top-seeded and third-ranked duo of Ore and Withrow were dominant for the second straight day, yielding only eight games on the afternoon. In the Round of 16, the pair defeated Rice’s tandem of Berger and Gonzalez, 8-2, and fought off Texas’ fifth-seeded duo of Holiner and Naumann, 8-6. Ore and Withrow will face Baylor’s fourth-seeded team of Galeano and Zsiga at 9 a.m. on Monday.

After downing Rice’s team of Bennett and Gustafsson, 8-2, in the Round of 16, the second-seeded pair of Adams and Vinsant was knocked out by Texas’ team of Hess-Olesen and Glasspool, 8-6, ending the sophomore pair’s chance for a repeat.

The Aggies tandem of Minavi and Moreiras suffered an agonizing tiebreaking loss in the quarterfinals to Baylor’s fourth-seeded team of Galeano and Zsiga, 8-7 (3), after knocking off TCU’s pair of Blake and Daniel, 8-4, in the Round of 16.

Efferding and Szabo were defeated by  the Longhorn’s tandem of Goldhoff and Lewis, 8-6, in the Round of 32.

The Aggies continue play at the ITA/USTA Texas Regional Championships on Monday. To learn more about the men’s tennis team, visit AggieAthletics.com and follow @AggieMTEN on Twitter.
