COLLEGE STATION, Texas – In its first home meet of the 2013-14 season, the No. 6 Texas A&M Equestrian team (0-1) will host No. 9 SMU (2-2) on Friday at 11 a.m. at the Brazos County Expo Complex.
The Aggies and Mustangs will start the competition with equitation over fences, slated for an 11 a.m. start in the South Arena. Horsemanship will follow fences in the South Arena, beginning at approximately 12:45 p.m. Equitation on the flat is set to start at 1 p.m. in the North Arena, and the show will end with reining in the South Arena, starting at about 2:30 p.m. All times are Central, and all home meets are free to the public.
Fans should wear pink to Friday’s meet as it is the Texas A&M equestrian team’s Breast Cancer Awareness Event. The first 150 fans to the BCEC will receive a free pink Texas A&M equestrian t-shirt. Those in attendance may also enter to win a $50 gift card from Academy. The winner will be announced midway through the meet.
Texas A&M dropped its season opener at No. 4 Kansas State last weekend. Sophomore Hannah Williams had the highest score of the meet, posting an 80 in equitation over fences to win her ride. Junior Haley Buchmiller also won her over fences matchup for the Aggies.
“Last weekend was tough for us, but our riders have been working hard this week to prepare for SMU,” Head Coach Tana McKay said. “We made some early-season mistakes at Kansas State and I think we’ll be able to learn from those for the rest of the season. We’re looking forward to our first home show and some great competition against SMU.”
The Aggies and Mustangs rode in a hunter seat competition as part of the Aggies’ home opener last season, resulting in a 9-3 Texas A&M victory. The Aggies hold a 6-2 all-time series lead on SMU.
