COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas A&M men’s tennis team begins its fall season this weekend as the squad splits up to travel to the SEC Fall Classic and Napa Valley Invitational from Friday through Sunday. The SEC Fall Classic is held at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., and the Napa Valley Invitational is hosted by the Meadowood Valley Resort in northern California.
A&M returns seven letterwinners from last year’s 14th-ranked team that went 19-13 and claimed the SEC West Title on the way to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament. The Aggies advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 20th consecutive year.
The Aggies will send Jeremy Efferding, Jordan Szabo, Jackson Withrow and Junior Ore to northern California to challenge at the season opening tournament. Efferding, who became the first player in A&M history to upset the ITA’s top-ranked player last season when he defeated eventual national champion Virginia’s Alex Domijan, garnered the highest singles ranking for A&M at No. 11. The All-American tandem of Junior Ore and Jackson Withrow came into the preseason rankings at No. 3 after being named a 5-8 seed at the NCAA Doubles Tournament last season.
The Maroon and White will send Harrison Adams, Shane Vinsant and Behzad Minavi as well as newcomers Max Montague, Tito Moreiras and Frankie Colunga to the SEC Fall Classic which opens on Friday. Sophomores Shane Vinsant and Harry Adams came in at No. 56 and 67, respectively, after impressive freshmen campaigns that featured All-SEC Second Team honors. The duo of Adams and Vinsant also garnered a No. 12 ranking after advancing to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships in Flushing, New York, last fall. Adams was named the No. 7 overall singles seed while Vinsant was named a 9-16 seed in singles. The sophomore pair was also named a 5-8 seed in the doubles draw.
