COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Two-time All-American Michael Wacha will become the 56th Aggie to reach the major leagues when he takes the mound for the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday evening at Busch Stadium.

Wacha is penciled in as the starting pitcher for the Cardinals who play cross-state rival Kansas City Royals at 7:15 pm Central. The Texarkana, Texas-native was 4-0 with a 2.05 ERA on the year at Triple-A Memphis prior to his promotion.

The right-handed pitcher’s debut comes less than a year after he was made a first-round selection by the St. Louis. The Cardinals picked Wacha with the 19th overall pick on June 4, 2012.

For his three-year Aggie career, the 6-foot-6 hurler posted a 27-7 record with a 2.40 ERA and 336 strikeouts, the fourth most all-time at Texas A&M. His 27 victories are tied for seventh all-time with Aggie legend Casey Fossum.

Wacha went 9-1 with a 2.06 ERA and 116 strikeouts in 113.1 innings for the Aggies as a junior in 2012. He was named All-America Second Team by Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball and Third Team by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

In 2011, he helped guide the Aggies to the College World Series, registering a 9-4 record with a 2.29 ERA and 123 strikeouts in 129.2 innings. Wacha garnered Baseball America All-America Third Team recognition for his work.

As a freshman, Wacha was 9-2 with a 2.90 ERA, one save and 97 strikeouts in 105.2 innings.

Earlier this season, Alex Wilson became the 55th former Aggie to play Major League Baseball. The 2009 letterman made his debut with the Boston Red Sox on April 11. Since his call-up, Wilson has appeared in 16 games, registering a 1-0 record on the mound with a 2.50 ERA and 15 strikeouts in 18.0 innings of work.

The Aggies have had at least one player make a Major League debut in each of the last three seasons, including Kevin Whelan in 2011, Brooks Raley in 2012 and Wilson in 2013. Wacha will be the 12th A&M player to make a debut since 2000.
