A&M has Two Selected in NWSL Draft

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - On Thursday, the Texas A&M Soccer team had two former standouts chosen in the 2013 National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) Supplemental Draft the league announced via the Twitter.

Merritt Mathias was selected by FC Kansas City in the third round (22nd overall). Alyssa Mautz was picked by the Chicago Red Stars in the fifth round (36th overall).

Mathias was a two-year starter at A&M (2010-11) after playing her first two seasons at the University of North Carolina. A two-time All-Big 12 First Team selection, she registered 17 goals and 16 assists for 50 points.

As a senior, Mathias tallied 27 points on eight goals and 11 assists to earn All-Big 12 First Team and NSCAA All-Central Region Second Team distinctions. She ended the 2011 season ranked 17th in the nation in total assists. In 2010, she garnered All-Big 12 First Team and Big 12 All-Newcomer accolades in junior after logging nine goals and five assists for the year.

In 2012, Mathias played for the New York Fury of the Women's Premier Soccer League Elite.

Mautz was a three-year starter at A&M (2008-10) after playing her freshman campaign at Saint Louis University. A two-time All-Big 12 selection, she tallied 21 goals and 10 assists in her three years in College Station, for 52 career points.

She garnered All-Big 12 First Team recognition in 2010 as she led the Aggies' offense with 29 points, on 12 goals and five assists. She earned NSCAA National Player of the Week recognition the opening week of the 2010 season after recording a hat trick against No. 16 Virginia Tech. She earned All-Big 12 Second Team recognition in 2009, logging four goals, two assists and 10 points on the season.

Last season, Mautz played for the Chicago Red Stars when they were a squad in the WPSL Elite. She tallied two goals and three assists in 13 games. Previously, she was a draft pick for Sky Blue FC in 2011, appearing in five games, including two starts on the season.

The NWSL is a new eight-team women's soccer league that will be administered by U.S. Soccer. The eight teams in the league are: Boston Breakers, Chicago Red Stars, FC Kansas City, Portland Thorns FC, Sky Blue FC (Piscataway, N.J.), Washington Spirit (Germantown, Md.), Western New York Flash (Rochester, N.Y.) and Seattle Reign FC.

The league is slated to begin play in April 2013 with each team playing 22 games.
