COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The White team took a 14-5 victory in the second game of the Texas A&M softball team's annual Maroon & White Series at the Aggie Softball Complex. The win stretched the series to a full three games as the teams are tied at one game each.
A three-run home run by senior Meagan May in the bottom of the first inning gave Maroon an early 3-0 lead. The bomb cleared the fence in left field for the home team advantage.
In the top of the third, junior Nicole Morgan hit an RBI single to narrow the scoring gap for the White team to a 3-1 Maroon advantage but Maroon stretched to a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the inning when May hit a leadoff solo home run and sophomore Brittany Clopton plated a run on a single to right field.
White took the lead in the top of the third when a fielder's choice forced a run home before freshman Breanna Dozier pounded a grand slam to left-center field for the 6-5 lead.
White held its one-run lead through the sixth inning when freshman Cali Lanphear went yard over right field with a solo homer for the 7-5 run. An RBI walk by junior Emily Albus, an RBI base hit by junior Taran Tyler and a single through the right side stretched the White lead to five runs with no outs.
A fielder's choice by Morgan sent the 11-5 run across the plate and with two outs Dozier hit her second long ball of the game. The three-run home run topped the wall in left-center field and was enough for a six-inning run rule.
Sophomore Lauren Ainsley pitched a full six innings for White, giving up five runs on 11 hits and walking one while striking out two for the win. Sara Mireles spent the final three innings in the circle for Maroon for the loss. The sophomore fanned one and walked four, and gave up 11 hits.
With the White victory, the series extends to a full three games. The final game tomorrow at 3:45 p.m. will decide a series winner. That game will also be broadcast on AggieAthletics.com and is free to the public. To learn more about Texas A&M softball, log on to AggieAthletics.com and follow @AggieSoftball on Twitter.
