HOUSTON, Texas- Alexis Klegou showed tremendous poise, character and fight as the senior co-captain finished off a thrilling match between the No. 11-ranked Texas A&M Aggies and the No. 14-ranked Texas Longhorns in the Texas Cup played at The Downtown Club at the Met in Houston late Friday with a 6-4 win in the third game of his match at No. 1 singles. Klegou's win gave the Aggies a 4-3 victory.

"That is the best game I have seen Gou (Klegou) have in his career," Aggie head coach Steve Denton said. "Under pressure with such an emotional match between rivals, he hits a screaming backhand winner and then follows with four winners in a row to break and finish out the match with a 6-4 win.

With the win, the Aggies improve to 5-1 on the season while the Horns fall to 5-2 on the year. Both squads have earned a trip to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships at Virginia later in February.

The victory marked the first Texas Cup for Texas A&M in the five-year history of the indoor showdown. It also marked the third straight win for the men's tennis team against Texas.

"We were able to win the doubles point and keep the momentum in our favor," Denton said. "(Colin) Hoover made quick work of Daniel Whitehead in straight sets (6-2, 6-4) and John Lewis continued to play well for another point before Gou (Klegou) was able to clinch the match. It was a great atmosphere down here and now we will have another teachable moment with our team. We have to bounce back quickly from an emotional match against Texas and get ready to face a very good Tulsa team on the road on Sunday."

The Aggies and Longhorns will face each other again on Saturday, Apr. 14, in Austin in a Big 12 regular-season match.

Up next, the Aggies will head to Tulsa, Oklahoma, to face the No. 23-ranked Tulsa Golden Hurricane on Sunday (Feb. 12). First serve at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the campus of Tulsa at 12 noon.
