Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar, who transferred to A&M from Maryland prior to the fall season, is an at-large entry at the prestigious USTA/ITA National Indoor Collegiate Championships, which get underway Thursday at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. The junior from Campo de Criptana, Spain, opens the tournament against top-seeded and defending NCAA singles champion Jana Juricova of California Thursday at 10:30 a.m. (CT).
Live scoring of the match will be available at ITATennis.com.
Sanchez-Quintanar is 11-2 this fall and has advanced to the finals at two of the three tournaments she has competed in thus far. Most recently, she rode an 11-match winning streak into the finals at the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships before falling to Baylor's Diana Nakic, who received an automatic berth into the national indoors by winning the regional.
While Sanchez-Quintanar wraps up the fall season in New York, her Aggie teammates will conclude the fall schedule at the UNC Kitty Harrison Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C., Nov. 4-6.
The annual tournament, held in honor of Kitty Harrison, a former head coach of the women's tennis team from 1977 to 1998, will be played at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. In the event of inclement weather, matches also will be played in the Sheffield Tennis Center at Duke in Durham.
Other teams participating in the event are Furman, Marshall, Minnesota, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Princeton, UNC Greensboro and Virginia.
