Aggie Duo Helps USA to Haarlem-Honkbal Week Title

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M standouts Nick Banks and AJ Minter helped lead the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team to a title at the 27th Haarlem-Honkbal Week in the Netherlands.

In Sunday’s championship game, Banks went 1-for-3 with one sacrifice bunt, one run and two RBI as the USA scored a 6-3 victory over Japan at Pim Mulier Stadium.

Team USA posted a 7-1 mark at Haarlem-Honkbal Week en route to its fourth title in eight trips to the biennial tournament since 2000. During the week, Banks started all eight games going .281 (9-for-32) with three runs and five RBI. Minter appeared in three games, retiring eight of the nine batters he faced in 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out three.

The Red, White and Blue own an 18-3-2 record for the summer. Banks has appeared in 21 games, including 19 starts. He is batting .270 (20-for-74) with two doubles, one home run and 12 RBI. Minter has made seven relief appearances, yielding just two unearned runs on two hits and seven walks while striking out eight over 9.2 innings.

Aggie head coach Rob Childress is serving as an assistant coach for the team. The squad is skippered by Arkansas head coach Dave Van Horn with assistance from Pepperdine’s Steve Rodriguez and New Mexico’s Ray Birmingham.

Team USA closes out the 2014 campaign with a five-game series in Cuba from July 23-27. The squad will play three games in Matanzas and three games in Pinar Del Rio.
