TALLAHASSEE, Fla.—Three Texas A&M women’s golfers placed in the top 10 Friday at the Florida State Match-Up to help the Aggies finish the first round in a tie for first.
The Aggies are tied with South Carolina at five over par, while host Florida State follows closely at six over par in third place. Clemson (+9), Virginia (+10), Mercer (+10), Furman (+14), Mississippi State (+17), Kansas (+21), Florida Gulf Coast (+22) and Kansas State (+27) follow consecutively.
“I didn't even know we were in first place,” Texas A&M head coach Trelle McCombs said. “We were just focusing on playing well and were letting the standings take care of themselves.”
Senior Katerina Ruzickova shot one under par to tie for third, while freshmen Andrea Jonama (E) and Bianca Fabrizio (+1) are tied for fifth and ninth, respectively. Freshman Callie Scheffler (+5, t34) and junior Natalie Reeves (+7, t44) rounded out the A&M contingency.
“I'm super proud of the girls,” McCombs said. “We just asked them to give us great attitude and maximum effort. The freshmen were impressive today. Bianca did a great job after her first hole to rebound from a double bogey. As a team, we started off a little rocky but ended up believing in the process of it all and keep that maximum effort we talked about.”
The second round of the match-up will begin Saturday at 7:30 am (CT). The Aggies are once again paired with Florida State and will begin teeing off from the first hole at 8:10 am (CT). Live scoring for the event is available at GolfStat.com.
