PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Returning to the links following the winter break, the No. 5 Texas A&M men’s golf team will tee off its spring schedule this week when the Aggies take part in the Sea Best Invitational.
The fifth-annual tournament, hosted by the University of Jacksonville, will take place at the historic Players Stadium Course on TPC at Sawgrass. The par-72, 6,977-yard course is most notably known as the annual host of the PGA Tour’s Players Championship.
“Playing one of America’s great venues to kick off the spring season only adds to our excitement,” Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. “TPC at Sawgrass is an incredible course. It is familiar to golfers of every level with history at every turn. We love to compete on great courses with great players and teams so we couldn’t ask for more.”
The Aggies are returning to the greens after finishing in the top five in three of four tournaments during the fall semester including second-place showings at the Dick's Sporting Goods Challenge Cup in September and the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate in October.
Texas A&M’s last outing came at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate in Dallas where it finished eighth in late October.
Sophomore Ben Crancer emerged as one of the country’s top collegiate golfers during the fall and is seeking to continue his streak of impressive play on the links. Ranked as the No. 4 individual nationally according to Golf Week, Crancer most notably set the Texas A&M school record for lowest 54-hole score versus par (197, -16) at the Dick’s Challenge Cup where he also took home top medalist honors.
In addition to Crancer, Texas A&M also features two more golfers in the top 50 of the Golf Week rankings as sophomore Andrew Lister checks in at No. 34 and senior Jade Scott represents the Aggies at No. 46.
“We are so excited to get started,” Higgins said. “It seems like an eternity since our last tournament but it’s finally here and the boys are ready to go.”
The tournament will begin Monday morning at 7:30 a.m. (CT) with a shotgun start for the first two rounds. Live scoring for the event can be found at GolfStat.com.
A year ago at the Sea Best Invitational, Texas A&M finished second in the 15-team field with Yates carding a one-over par, three-round total of 217 to claim runner-up honors.
