DALLAS, Texas – The Texas A&M men’s swimming and diving team ended its regular season of dual meet competition with a win on the road at SMU in the Perkins Natatorium Friday. The 143-100 A&M victory marks the end of the regular season for both the Aggies and the Mustangs.
After a close loss to LSU last week, the men’s squad came ready to win, taking 10 first place finishes out of 13 total events. Just as they began the season, the men end on a win for an overall record of 2-3.
“Overall it was a really good meet,” head coach Jay Holmes said. “We had a lot of guys step up and swim really well putting pressure on themselves.”
Bringing the Aggies multiple wins was senior Paul-Marc Schweitzer who took a huge victory in the 200 free in a time of 1:36.88, and in the 200 back in 1:46.73.
Other individual victories came from senior Bryan Michaels who in his last dual meet led a sweep of the 500 free hitting the wall in 4:32.01, followed by teammates sophomore Antoine Marc (4:32.66) and sophomore Mitch Glander (4:35.14). Marc had a win in the 1000 free in 9:25.50, senior Simon Frank in the 200 IM (1:48.20), senior Omar Enriquez in the 200 fly (1:47.19), and senior Henrik Lindau in the 100 free (44.47).
Opening the meet with a win was the 400 medley relay squad of sophomore Alexandros Theocharidis, senior Jack Burley, Lindau, and senior Kyle Troskot hitting the wall in 3:15.23. The Aggies closed the meet on a win as well with the foursome of Lindau, sophomore Bolleter, junior Shaw, and Schweitzer grabbing the victory in a time of 2:58.04.
In the springboard competition, junior Ford McLiney scored 359.10 for a second place finish in the 1-meter. From the 3-meter board McLiney took first place with a final score of 394.72.
“I was really happy about this and it was a big change to dive in a pool so shallow,” said head diving coach Jay Lerew. “I was glad for Ford, and I think he should have won both dives, but he got it back on the 3-meter. I was really proud of our divers.”
The next step for the Aggies is the Air Force Academy Diving Invitational in Colorado Springs, Co. on January 30. The full team will compete next at the Southeastern Conference Championship in Athens, Ga. On February 18.
