Texas A&M Heisman trophy-winning quarterback Johnny Manziel today announced that he has begun the process of filing the paperwork necessary to declare for the 2014 NFL draft.

“After long discussions with my family, friends, teammates, and coaches, I have decided to make myself available for the 2014 NFL Draft.  The decision was not an easy one, but we all felt this was the right time to make the next step toward a professional career,” said Manziel. “My experiences here and the support of this school, Coach Sumlin, Chancellor (John) Sharp, my teammates, my classmates and Aggie football fans everywhere will be something that I carry with me for the rest of my life.  I’ll always be an Aggie.”

Manziel, from Kerrville, Texas, leaves Texas A&M as one of the most decorated and exciting players in college football history. The first-ever freshman to win the Heisman Trophy in 2012, Manziel was a two-time first-team All-Southeastern Conference pick at quarterback. He was the college player of the year in 2012 and he also won the Davey O’Brien Award and the Manning Award.

“In all of my years of coaching, Johnny Manziel is the most exciting football player I have ever seen,” Aggie head coach Kevin Sumlin said. “We appreciate everything he has done for Texas A&M and Aggie football and wish him nothing but the best.”

As a sophomore, Manziel was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy and finished fifth in the voting. He was also a finalist for the O’Brien, Walter Camp Player of the Year, Maxwell Award, Manning Award, Hornung Award and the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award.

In 2013, Manziel set school records for passing yards, passing touchdowns and total offense in 2013 as he generated 4,873 total yards, while completing 300-of-429 passes for 4,114 yards and 37 touchdowns and rushing for 759 yards and nine touchdowns. His completion percentage of 69.9 was also a school record.

Manziel is the only player in NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision history to gain 5,000 total yards in a season, while rushing for 1,000 yards (5,116/1,410 in 2012). Also in 2012, he became the fifth FBS players to pass for 3,000 and rush for 1,000 in a season, and he became the fifth player to rush and pass for 20 or more touchdowns in a single season. Manziel became the first sophomore in FBS history to pass for 7,000 yards and rush for 2,000 yards in 2013.
