COLLEGE STATION – The Texas A&M men’s basketball team will make its final preparations for the tip-off of the 2013-14 campaign Wednesday night when the Aggies host Texas-Permian Basin in an exhibition game inside Reed Arena at 7 p.m.
The contest is part of Aggie Athletes Involved (AAI)’s annual winter coat drive, and fans who bring a donation of a new or gently used coat will be granted free admission. Fans who can’t make it to Aggieland for the event can follow the action with a live video stream (available to premium subscribers of 12th Man TV) and a free live audio stream. Log on to aggieathletics.com to access the video and audio stream.
The Aggies enter the year looking to take another step forward in their third season under the direction of head coach Billy Kennedy. Kennedy and his staff welcome back six letterwinners from last season’s 18-win squad, including senior guard Fabyon Harris, who averaged over 13 points per game during SEC play a year ago and ranked among the conference leaders in 3-point field goal percentage (.453).
Despite being temporarily sidelined by a medical issue last week, junior forward Kourtney Roberson will be back on the court this year after playing a significant role last season. The Arcadia, La., native paced the Aggies and ranked eighth in the SEC by averaging 6.6 rebounds per contest a year ago.
Additionally, the dynamic local duo of sophomore guards Alex Caruso (College Station, Texas) and J-Mychal Reese (Bryan, Texas) return after developing into contributors as rookies in 2012-13. Meanwhile, sophomore forward Antwan Space and redshirt freshman guard Shawn Smith will make their Maroon & White debuts after sitting out last season.
Joining the solid mix of returners is a talented group of six newcomers who give the Aggies a significant boost in athleticism. Highlighting the group is junior college guard Jamal Jones, a 6-foot-8 wing scorer, along with freshmen Davonte Fitzgerald, Dylan Johns and Tavario Miller, all of whom are expected to contribute this season.
UTPB is an NCAA Division-II institution that competes in the Heartland Conference. The Falcons are led by head coach Andy Newman and are coming off a 10-15 campaign a year ago which saw them finish seventh in the Heartland standings.
Following Wednesday’s exhibition, Texas A&M men’s basketball will officially christen the 2013-14 campaign on Nov. 8 when it hosts Buffalo at Reed Arena.
