KINGSTON SPRINGS, Tenn. – The Texas A&M men’s golf team wrapped up play at the Dick's Challenge Cup on Sunday by helping the Southeastern Conference edge the Atlantic Coast Conference in match play competition.

As a team, the Aggies narrowly dropped their match against Virginia 3-2 with senior Jade Scott and sophomore Andrew Lister claiming head-to-head wins. Overall, the SEC claimed victory in total matches won by a count of 17-8.

“Virginia was the better team today,” Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. “We never really got anything going and they were more aggressive. They were applying pressure all day and made us hit tough shots instead of the other way around. That’s a tough position to play from and it was all day today. Give them credit, they outplayed us.”

Despite the setback on Sunday, the weekend was an impressive one for the Aggies who were the runner-up to team champion Georgia following three rounds of stroke play.

Additionally, sophomore Ben Crancer (68-63-66=197, -16) claimed individual medalist honors as the Kirkwood, Mo., native set a Texas A&M school record for 54-hole score vs. par at 16-under. Fueled by a head-turning score of 63 during the event’s second round, Crancer also became the first Aggie to finish a 54-hole tournament in less than 200 strokes.

“I think overall this was a great tournament for us,” Higgins added. “Taking second as a team in stroke play and getting some experience in match play is going to be invaluable for us down the road. We also saw some things we need get better at to put us in the position we want to be later in the season and on into the postseason.”

Texas A&M men’s golf returns to the links on Oct. 7-8 when the Aggies tee off at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate on the Old Overton Golf Club in Vestavia Hills, Ala.
