GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Texas A&M women’s golf team finished Friday’s opening round tied for eighth place at the Lady Paladin Invitational, hosted by Furman University.

The Aggie effort was led by senior Chelsea Mocio’s two-over par performance, finishing the first day in a tie for 21st. The Fort Worth native tallied 14 pars and one birdie on the day.

“Chelsea played solid all day linking several pars together,” head coach Trelle McCombs said. “She had just a couple bogeys that she could not cover up, but I am happy with her round and the leadership she is demonstrating for our young lineup.”

Mocio’s fellow senior, Katerina Ruzickova finished at four-over par, tied for 33rd. The freshman trio of Bianca Fabrizio (+3 T25), Andrea Jonama (+5 T48) and Thanya Pattamakijsakul (+10 T83) completed the maroon and white lineup.

Georgia Regents University (285) took the day one lead at three-under par followed by Clemson (287), Furman (290), Wisconsin (290) and Florida State (294) to round out the top five. Coastal Carolina (301), East Carolina (301), Georgia State (302), Wofford (302) and UNC Wilmington (302) join Texas A&M (302) at eighth place on the day-one leaderboard. Rounding out the field are Kennesaw State (306), Samford (307), Southern Mississippi (314), Nova Southeastern (316) and UNC-Greensboro (326).

“Unfortunately we finished poorly today after a solid front nine,” McCombs said. “We are making mistakes and not learning from them. It is still early in the year and with three freshmen in the lineup we are going to have bumps and bruises along the way, we just have to learn from our mistakes faster.”

Competing as an individual, sophomore Alex Neal finished the day at five-over par in a tie for 48th.

The Aggies return to the links at 8 a.m. (CT) Saturday morning with a shotgun start. The tee times for Saturday’s round were altered due to inclement weather expected to move into the Greenville area.
