COLLEGE STATION – The Texas A&M men’s golf team will head to Tennessee this weekend to take on SEC and ACC opponents in the Dick’s Sporting Goods Challenge Cup.
“We couldn't be more excited to get the season going in earnest,” Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. “Our qualifiers have been intense and competitive and the boys are fired up to take it out on the road.”
Hosted in conjunction with the Golf Club of Tennessee and the Nashville Sports Council, the three-day, 54-hole tournament will set the top schools from the SEC and the ACC against each other. The event culminates in an 18-hole match play conference finale that will determine “Top Conference” honors.
Joining the Aggies, who enter the week at the No. 21 spot in the Golf Week men’s team collegiate rankings, in the event will be SEC schools Georgia, Mississippi State, Tennessee and Vanderbilt while the ACC will be represented by Boston College, Clemson, Duke, Virginia and Wake Forest.
In addition to the face-off between conferences, Saturday afternoon will feature a member/collegiate scramble in which two collegiate players are paired with two club members and/or event sponsors for a four-person team scramble.
One of the top courses in the state, the prestigious Golf Club of Tennessee, located just outside of Nashville in Kingston Springs, Tenn., has played host to many amateur and pro-am events. Additionally, the golf club hosts events such as the Vinny and the Music City Bowl Charity Cup. The event will take place on the 7,184, par-71 course that sprawls across 317 acres of Tennessee’s terrain.
“I have heard nothing but great things about the Golf Club of Tennessee, but we have never seen it before so we will have to be diligent in our preparation during the practice round,” Higgins asserted. “This format is unique but it sounds like fun and we still have 54 holes of stroke play to determine the team champion and the medalist against a strong field on a tough course.”
Round one of the tournament begins Friday at 8:00 a.m. with a double tee start. Live scoring for the event can be found at GolfStat.com.
