COLLEGE STATION—With NFL training camps opening across the country, 35 former Texas A&M football players are looking to secure spots on the final rosters.
The longest tenured Aggie in the NFL is All-Pro punter Shane Lechler who played 13 years for the Oakland Raiders before joining the Houston Texans in the offseason. Lechler was a four-year Aggie letterman from 1996-99 and played his high school football at East Bernard.
Another NFL special teams standout is deep snapper Don Muhlbach who is beginning his 10th season with the Detroit Lions. Muhlbach lettered for Texas A&M in 2002 and 2003 before moving on to Detroit. Muhlbach played at Lufkin High School and his younger brother, Beau, was a four-year basketball letterman for Texas A&M (2005-08).
Several members of the 2012 Aggie football team that finished with an 11-2 overall record and a No. 5 national ranking are looking to secure roster spots.
All-American offensive tackle and Outland Trophy winner Luke Joeckel was the second overall selection in the first round of the 2013 NFL draft and opens camp with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Running back Christine Michael was a second-round selection by the Seattle Seahawks while All-American defensive lineman Damontre Moore was a third-round selection by the New York Giants. Linebacker Sean Porter was a fourth-round pick by the Cincinnati Bengals and wide receiver Ryan Swope was a sixth-round selection by the Arizona Cardinals.
Free agent signees include center Patrick Lewis with the Green Bay Packers, defensive lineman Spencer Nealy with the Detroit Lions, wide receiver Uzoma Nwachukwu with the Houston Texans, linebacker Jonathan Stewart with the St. Louis Rams, and defensive back Steven Terrell with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Several Aggies are also on NFL coaching staffs led by head coaches Gary Kubiak of the Houston Texans and Dennis Allen of the Oakland Raiders. Dan Campbell is a tight ends coach for the Miami Dolphins, Kyle Caskey is an assistant offensive line coach and quality control with the Cincinnati Bengals, Jerry Fontenot coaches tight ends with the Green Bay Packers and is joined on that staff by special teams coordinator Shawn Slocum. Kirk Parrish is the college scouting coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks.
