BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – The Texas A&M Aggies were named the favorites to win the 2013 Southeastern Conference women’s soccer title in voting conducted by the league’s coaches, the SEC announced on Tuesday afternoon.

Texas A&M earned eight first-place votes to edge out Florida who garnered six votes. The Aggies and Gators were the only two teams to receive votes to win the overall crown.

The Maroon and White was picked first in the Western Division with 91 total points (13 first-place votes), ahead of LSU’s 67 points (one first-place vote).

In 2012, the Texas A&M won a Western Division title in its first season in the SEC. The Aggies earned a bid to their 18th consecutive NCAA Tournament, advancing to the Sweet 16 before falling to Florida State in Tallahassee. A&M finished the season ranked 14th in the nation with a 19-5-1 record (10-2-1 SEC). The 19 wins was one shy of the school record.

Four Aggies return for the 2013 season after earning All-SEC honors last year, including three first-team all-conference selections – goalkeeper Jordan Day, forward Annie Kunz and midfielder Meghan Streight.

Florida was selected tops in the Eastern Division by garnering 89 total points (11 first-place votes). Kentucky and Tennessee (three first place votes) tied for second in the East with 71 points each.

Points were compiled on a 7-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis for each division, though each coach was not allowed to vote for their own team. Each coach also voted for one team as an overall conference champion.

The Aggies begin the 2013 campaign on Friday, August 23 when they host the Duke Blue Devils at Ellis Field. A&M opens league play on Friday, September 20 with a road match against the Tennessee Volunteers in Knoxville.
