BIRMINGHAM – SEC honors for men’s Runner of the Week and men’s Field Athlete of the Week were awarded to Texas A&M seniors Henry Lelei and Sam Humphreys from their performances at the Oregon Pepsi Team Invitational this past weekend.

Lelei broke his own A&M school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as he won the event in a world-leading time of 8:32.94. Lelei bettered his career best of 8:38.90 set a year ago in winning the Big 12 title and broke the 1996 meet record of 8:40.91. Lelei currently tops the collegiate and SEC ranks by nine-plus seconds.

In defending this 2012 victory at the Pepsi Team Invitational, Lelei posted one of the fastest times ever in the steeplechase during a dual, triangular or quad meet setting.

Humphreys returned to the Hayward Field venue he won the U.S. Olympic Trials in the javelin last summer and produced a winning mark of 256-3 (78.10) that topped the field by nearly 18 feet.

Finishing second to Humphreys was Olympic Trials runner-up Sam Crouser of Oregon, who threw 238-5 and entered the meet ranked third collegiately this season.  Humphreys has been the collegiate leader this season ever since he opened up his outdoor campaign with a 267-1 (81.40) at the Arizona State Invitational in mid-March.
