FLUSHING, N.Y. - Texas A&M's Stefania Hristov and Cristina Stancu won the consolation back draw and Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar won a pair of matches today to advance to the finals of the singles consolation at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, played at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Hristov and Stancu, playing only their second tournament together, won the consolation doubles back draw with an 8-5 victory over Tereza Bekerova and Paige Miles of Utah.

"We had gotten off to a slow start in previous matches, so before today's match we talked about getting off to a strong start," A&M assistant coach Mark Weaver said. "Stefania and Tina took the words to heart and jumped out to a 3-0 lead."

Utah got within 4-3, when the Aggies turned it up a notch to pull away.

"We started going for our shots and hit big forehand winners," Weaver said. "The girls played well and were in control for the majority of the match. They had a good tournament."

In singles, fourth-ranked Sanchez-Quintanar defeated Gina Suarez-Malaguti of North Carolina, 7-5, 7-6 (5), in the consolation quarterfinals. The senior from Campo de Criptana, Spain, then earned a spot in the finals with a semifinal 6-3, 7-6 (2) victory over Kansas State's 14th-ranked Petra Niedermayerova, an opponent Sanchez-Quintanar is very a familiar with and has the utmost respect for after defeating the former Big 12 Player of the Year four times last season, including at the National Indoors and the NCAA Singles Championship.

"It was really high quality tennis," Weaver said. "They both have similar styles and play fast with a variety of shots. It was a hard-fought match in which Cristina played the big points better.

"This was the fifth time Cristina has played Niedermayerova, and as always Niedermayerova fought the entire way. It was very offensive tennis. Nearly every point was decided by a winner, and there were very few unforced errors. Whoever dictated play early in the point typically won. Cristina is playing pretty good tennis right now."

Sanchez-Quintanar will face 36th-ranked Alexa Guarachi of Alabama Sunday at 10:30 (CT) in the consolation championship match. The two also have a history, having met in the first round of the 2011 NCAA Singles Championship. Sanchez-Quintanar was down triple-match point in the third set but came back in dramatic fashion to defeat 52nd-ranked Guarachi, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (3) to begin a run that would reach the quarterfinals.

Live scoring of the tournament will be available at itatennis.com.
